Travel records obtained by the Opposition through Freedom of Information requests show Australia’s First Nations Ambassador has continued his prolific overseas travel, spending $59,643 on overseas travel in the five months from July to November 2024 - an average of about $12,000 a month.

Mr Mohamed’s destinations included Switzerland and the United States, two countries the First Nations Ambassador has visited numerous times since being appointed to the role.

These latest figures are in addition to the previously revealed cost of Mohamed’s business-class travel that saw him spend $145,000 of taxpayer funds in just 12 months.

Opposition Government Waste spokesman, James Stevens, said “these latest revelations underscore the money being wasted on a pointless position that could be used to address genuine disadvantage in Indigenous communities.

“The position of First Nations Ambassador is clearly a global tourism opportunity for the lucky person appointed to the role.

“This demonstrates the Albanese Government is more interested in symbolism than practical outcomes for Indigenous Australians.

“Anthony Albanese has a chance to put an end to this overseas odyssey by scrapping the role when Mr Mohamed’s contract comes to an end in a few weeks’ time,” Mr Stevens said.
