Rudd squeezes in time to be US Ambassador around book tour

Kevin Rudd’s book tour across America seems to be leaving little time for him to do his full-time job.

On the 18 October 2024, Australia’s Ambassador to the United States, Dr Kevin Rudd, launched his latest book, On Xi Jinping, at the Asia Society in New York. Since the launch just over two weeks before the US Presidential election, Rudd has been on leave to spruik his book, engaging in hour-long Q&A sessions with exclusive audiences.

As the head of Australia’s diplomatic mission in the US, Ambassador Rudd has responsibility for maintaining our relationship with our most important ally and ensuring our country’s interests are furthered.

There are few events worthier of the Ambassador’s time than an imminent presidential election - especially one that guarantees a new administration in the White House.

“I’m quite surprised that the person in charge of our relationship with the United States, weeks before their Presidential election, has time to travel around spruiking his book,” Opposition waste spokesperson James Stevens said.

“Kevin Rudd is paid very well to be Australia’s full-time Ambassador and should be focussed on the job, not distracted trying to maximise his book sales.

“Anthony Albanese chose to make Kevin Rudd the Ambassador. He needs to explain why, a week out from the US election, his man is travelling across the country on a sales tour.

“Australia’s relationship with the United States is vitally important to our national interests. We need an Ambassador that is committed to strengthening this relationship, not his public profile,” Mr Stevens said.
